ICHTYOL., peu usité. Genre de poissons de mer qui comprend les daurades. Les diverses espèces de poissons étoient aussi bonnes que multipliées (...). Des spares, mulets, labres (...) étoient répandus dans toutes les parties de la rade [Australie] (FREYCINET, Voy. terres austr., 1815, p. 150).
Prononc. et Orth.:[]. Att. ds Ac. 1835, 1878. Étymol. et Hist. 1764 (WALM.). Empr. au lat. des zoologistes sparus (1758, LINNÉ, Syst. Nat., 277 ds NEAVE); cf. 1554 sparallon « poisson de mer semblable à la daurade » (RONDELET, Hist. des poissons, p. 119), issu du lat. sparus « sorte de poisson de mer » (empr. au gr. ), propr. « javelot ». Le dimin. sparulus (att. chez Ovide) est à l'orig. du fr. sparle (1560, GESNER, Figures et portraits de plus de DCC poissons, 42 ds FEW t. 12, p. 137a).
